Any facility that authorizes its own drone flights — security patrols, inspections, mapping, deliveries — faces the same problem once it starts monitoring the airspace: how do you tell your own aircraft apart from everyone else's without treating every flight as a potential alert? Whitelisting is the answer most detection platforms use.
How whitelisting works
Whitelisting means registering the identifying details of known, authorized aircraft — typically the Remote ID serial number or session ID — into the platform ahead of time. When the system detects a broadcast matching a whitelisted identifier, it can recognize that aircraft as expected and handle it differently than an unknown one, such as by suppressing an alert or displaying it in a distinct way on the map.
This works because the same identity field that makes an aircraft traceable under Remote ID also makes it recognizable to a system that already knows about it.
Why it reduces alert fatigue
Without whitelisting, a facility running its own routine drone operations would see a stream of alerts for its own aircraft, mixed in with anything genuinely unexpected. Over time, that noise makes it harder for staff to notice the alert that actually matters. Whitelisting narrows the alert stream to unknown or unauthorized activity, which is usually what a security or operations team actually wants to be notified about.
It's worth noting that whitelisting depends on an aircraft consistently broadcasting the identifier it was registered under. It's a configuration tool for managing known, expected traffic — not a security control on its own.
