What Is Remote ID?

An introduction to the FAA's Remote ID rule, what it requires, and why it exists.

Remote ID is often described as a "digital license plate" for drones. It's a rule from the Federal Aviation Administration that requires most drones flying in United States airspace to broadcast identifying information about themselves and their flight while airborne. The rule took effect for operators in stages, with enforcement beginning in 2024, and it now applies across the vast majority of routine drone operations in the country.

Who the rule applies to

Remote ID applies to any drone that is required to be registered with the FAA, which covers most drones weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) flown for recreational, commercial, or government purposes. Operators can comply in one of three ways: fly a drone with Remote ID broadcast capability built in by the manufacturer, add an FAA-accepted broadcast module to an existing aircraft, or fly within a small number of FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs) that exempt aircraft without Remote ID from broadcasting, within defined boundaries.

A narrow set of aircraft — generally drones weighing 0.55 pounds or less flown strictly for recreation, and some limited categories like certain amateur-built aircraft flown under specific conditions — fall outside the requirement. For everyone else, Remote ID is now a standard part of legal drone operation.

Why the rule exists

The FAA introduced Remote ID to address a basic problem: as drone traffic grew, there was no reliable way for air traffic controllers, public-safety agencies, or the FAA itself to know what an aircraft was or who was responsible for it just by observing it in the sky. Remote ID gives authorized parties a way to identify a drone in real time, which supports airspace safety, security around sensitive locations, and the broader goal of eventually integrating drones more fully into the national airspace system alongside manned aircraft.

In practical terms, Remote ID is a foundational layer. It doesn't by itself prevent unsafe or unauthorized flights, but it makes drone activity visible and attributable in a way that wasn't possible before, which is what tools like Zing's detection products are built to take advantage of.
